2024 - 25 SWENext Leaders, edited and published by Isha Talpade
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) has provided women engineers a voice in the field of engineering. Kent Place School (KPS) is joining the SWE community by creating a SWENext Club. The club is a way to connect SWE members with students who are interested in engineering and STEM at KPS. The SWENext club provides an opportunity for members to find support, inspiration, and fun through STEM. We will work together to engage with local engineers, host outreach events, and create friendly competitions. There are many areas in the field of engineering that we explore throughout the year such as making slime, 3D printing, and building gingerbread houses. In this club, we also learn about different types of engineering such as sustainable and aerospace engineering.
For our first meeting of the year, we learned about the engineering behind paper airplanes. Then we had a paper airplane competition. For our Halloween meeting, we made oobleck, which is both a solid and a liquid. For our most recent meeting, we made catapults, after learning about the engineering behind them.
Furthermore, the SWENext club facilitates STEM sisterhood activities with the primary school such as STEM-related friendly competitions. During National Engineering Week, we create a variety of activities for both the middle and high school to participate in such as the tiny house collaboration.
