Spring is Coming!

By: Isha T

Spring is almost here and while school is in full swing, spending the weekends outside to unwind can be extremely beneficial to hit the ground running on Monday. Here are the top places I recommend for a good time outside this spring in our local area.

Branch Brook Park

These gorgeous trees are only in full bloom for a brief time. It is a perfect place to go on a walk, have a picnic, or people watch on the bench. It is truly stunning to walk under these in full bloom, and you don’t even need to go all the way to D.C because these are the largest collection of cherry blossoms in the country! (Source) It is an amazing public park so be sure to check it out.

Loantaka Park

With ducks, deer, horses and toddlers sprawling in the sun this is a great place to go on a run, a walk, or bike ride. You can also hang by the duck pond and have a picnic. With a total of 883 acres of wildlife, these trails and fields are beautiful in the early morning and sunset.  I go on a walk here with my family and dog every Saturday during the Spring and I love seeing the wildflowers.

When you’re done, stop by downtown Madison to check out the farmers market, which is every Thursday or the boba shop, Noon Tea.

Farmers Markets

Taking a break from the trees for just a minute, New Jersey has some of the best farmers markets. A lot of us are familiar with our own towns, but try exploring the other markets around, each one has its own unique twist. In Summit, there are a handful of food vendors selling food such as pizza and empanadas and a couple of cool coffee stands. They also have an annual bake off which is great fun.

Produce Picking

And… if you’re looking for a more pick the produce yourself kinda vibe, late spring has fantastic fruit picking to offer. Strawberries, blackberries, and cherries are all ready to pick late May, but the show stealer of Spring is the variety of vegetables! Pick a couple of veggies and try making a recipe or two, the freshness will really set it apart. Asparagus, broccoli, collard greens, lettuce, peas, and spinach are just some of the vegetables that are ready to be picked late April. Below are a couple farms well known around here. Press on the links to check out what is the best time to pick your favorite fruit or vegetable at their farm, or just browse the website!

Alstede Farms, Chester

Abma’s Farm, Wyckoff     Hillview Farms, Gillette

Middle Valley Farms, Mendham Ort Farms, Long Valley

Are there any Spring activities or places I didn’t mention that are extra special to you? Please mention it here, there may be a second addition coming to this series!
